Might as well post this now while everything is still fresh in my mind and the way things are looking, it's not going to be good.
It all started last Fri. night when we were getting ready for bed. Sam did manage to jump in the bed with us but bubba noticed that something just didn't seem right with Sam. (which is odd cause he was fine all day Friday before I went to work) Come early Sat. morning, bubba saw Sam walking out of his closet and then later, didn't know where he went till we looked under the spare bedroom's bed. Sam doesn't normally hide unless he thinks we want something from him or like most animals hide when something isn't going right for them/in them. We went out for a bit in the morning and when we came back, he finally came out from the bed but was sitting by the door in the room.
So I carried him to the living room and placed him on bubba's lap and he just went nuts; meowing and getting really antsy so we put him on the floor and watched to see what he did. He would try to walk forward but as soon as he took a step, he cried out and started to back up and just sat where he was. His left leg is what seemed to have been bothering him the most cause he wouldn't carry on if you touched the right side.
All weekend we would bring him his food and water wherever he decided to lay and bubba would take him to the litter box to see if he had to go potty. He pooped once on Sat but mostly through the weekend he peed. At least he was eating, drinking, and peeing though by Sunday, you could tell he was constipated cause his belly was kinda hard. And this sucked cause by the time we really noticed that something was bothering him, it was already noon on Sat and the vet closes at noon. Since it didn't seem to be too much of an emergency, we just kept our eye on him till today.
Now what was weird was that apparently Sam could get around but we don't know how since he would move when we weren't near him. It wasn't till I took him to the vet that I saw just how he walked.
At the time since we didn't know if it was his leg or what, we thought that maybe he might have hurt himself while jumping up or off the bed, either pulling a muscle or a slight fracture.
When the vet was checking him over, of course the first two things I knew what he was going to point out and that was the ear problem and bad teeth. IF we were made out of fucking money perhaps we would've looked into getting his teeth taken care of but we don't have $500 to blow. Fuck, it's bad enough that the bill right now will no doubt be over $500 once everything is said and done.
When he checked out his legs and put pressure in the areas he was feeling, it didn't bother Sam so much. But once he had Sam on all 4's and put some pressure on his lower back, that's when it really bothered him. They took him out in the back hallway to see how he walks and the vet asked me if that was how he moved around. This was the first time I saw Sam walk and when he did, he had a slight limp.
Right now the vet diagnosed him of having Inflammatory Disc Disease. Said it could be treatable with steroids and anti-inflammatories but won't know how it will take for at least a day so Sam has to stay the night. They called bubba I guess after they took a blood and pee sample and the pee sample had some blood in it >____< (likely cause of not being able to go to the bathroom as much as he should've). Also said that his liver was a bit big and his kidneys were small. They weren't sure if it was cause of his age or there's something else going on inside.
Keep in mind that Sam is a good bit over 15yrs old so sooner or later he was bound to have something go wrong with him.
Bubba and I have come to terms and accepted the fact that we may just have to put Sam down if he doesn't get better or his overall health doesn't improve. I cried a little on Sat. when I saw how it hurt him to walk forward and then cried a good bit this morning knowing we might not have Sam around anymore. I tell myself that I have accepted that Sam might have to be put down and knowing how old he is kinda helps the acceptance better. BUT I'd rather have him die of old age in his sleep than to have his organs go bad or bone issues to where he's suffering.
I hope and pray that the treatment they give him today helps but I can't help but think negative about the whole situation. We'll know the results by tomorrow.
